UK Vegetable Genebank Distribution Policy
Warwick Genetic Resources Unit (WGRU) manages the UK Vegetable Genebank (UKVGB) project. The UKVGB
maintains a collection of vegetable germplasm as a public good resource and is funded by the UK
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Some of the material was acquired prior to the entry
into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity; or if it was acquired after the entering into force
of the Convention on Biological Diversity, it was obtained with the understanding that it was conserved and
could be made available for any research, breeding and training purposes. The United Kingdom Government is
a signatory to the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (the Treaty), such
that these collections of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA) are placed within the
purview of the Treaty.
WGRU will provide seeds in small experimental quantities (0.5 or 1 grams) of up to 100 accessions per order
from the germplasm collection under the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA) as appropriate for the crop
as part of its policy of maximizing the utilization of material for research, breeding and training. Requestors
asking for >100 accessions may be contacted to discuss their requirements.
Not all the material in the WGRU collections has been verified taxonomically and therefore the taxonomic name on
seed packets supplied by WGRU should not be taken as definitive unless specifically stated. WGRU makes no warranties
as to the safety or title of the material, nor as to the accuracy or correctness of any passport or other data provided
with the material. Neither does it make any warranties as to the quality, viability, or purity (genetic or mechanical)
of the material being furnished.
The recipient assumes full responsibility for complying with the recipient nation's quarantine and biosafety
regulations and rules as to import or release of genetic material. It is the responsibility of the requestor to meet any
particular phytosanitary requirements for the import of seed into their country. We can only ship seed in accordance with
the relevant national regulations. For orders from outside the UK/EU, we require an import permit or an official document
clearly stating phytosanitary requirements for import. If phytosanitary documentation is required, any charges will be passed
on to the requestor and we will discuss this with you after receipt of your order. Seeds are dispatched on the understanding
that any characterisation or evaluation data produced relevant to the material are returned for inclusion in the UKVGB database
for the benefit of the user community. We appreciate copies of publications citing use of the material.
Important notes
The enclosed seed are provided on the understanding that the recipient will return any data relevant to the material, and
publications citing its use, to SLS.Genebank@warwick.ac.uk or Genetic Resources Unit, University of Warwick Innovation Campus, Wellesbourne, Warwick CV35 9EF, UK.
Quarantine:
Seed accessions have been inspected for extraneous plant material, insects and visible pathogens. The dispatch agency accepts
no responsibility for seed borne infection and all germplasm should be utilised under quarantine conditions. For Allium accessions
a seed treatment is recommended prior to sowing as a precaution against Botrytis.
Germination:
The seed provided are dried to low moisture content and require controlled hydration prior to sowing. WGRU recommends opening the
foil pouch 24 hours before use to permit the uptake of atmospheric moisture by the seeds.
Seed treatment:
WGRU does not apply seed treatment chemicals to any genetic resources seed regenerated on site. However we receive and distribute
seed from third parties that may have been seed treated. Please be aware of this possibility and use proper precautions in handling.
DO NOT USE for food or feed purposes.
